Kenya
Foster Update (04/15/08)
Kenya is a 1 year old German Short Hair Pointer mix. We don't actually think she has pit in her at all - but that's ok cuz we don't discriminate. Kenya has been in our program for far too long. Probably because people come onto our site looking for a bully breed and she just can't seem to pull that off.
She can be quite active at times but then loves to settle in and cuddle cuddle cuddle. And did I say she loves to cuddle? In fact, Kenya is looking for someone with a great big lap - or at least an available one - as she doesn't quite have a concept of her own size.
While one would not call Kenya petite, don't tell her that. Her favorite thing to do is to jump up on your lap when you least expect it. The other day I was working on the computer and - plop - Kenya landed in my lap. As I attempted to push her onto the floor, she was able to maneuver around to be behind me. I left her there and eventually she fell asleep with her paws draped on each shoulder and her head flopped over my right shoulder. Snores of contentment kept me captive.
Kenya doesn't appear to have spent much time with other dogs and has a difficult time reading play signals. She seems to want to romp and chase but scares very easily. She has done best with dogs smaller than her - who she play bows with and then plays squash the puppy. She also has done very well with a calm male dog who basically was happy to just hang out. Kenya does really well with my dog savvy cat, Tobee. She will play as rough as he lets her. If she gets more playful than I am comfortable with, she redirects very easily.
Kenya makes ample use of the toy box in our family room - selectively giving each toy a turn. She enjoys smaller fabric toys to toss in front of her to leap on. She will spend plenty of time quietly destroying rubber toys as well. Kenya doesn't seem to have learned how to play with people. Her interactions with me all seem to revolve around cuddling and lap sitting. She seems to want to play and will play bow in front of you, but tends to startle herself and retreat to her kennel or pillow.
Kenya would shine in a home where people are home much of the time. She would love to be able to stay mostly inside with a dog door to get to the outside. She will break into the house by any means possible if left outside for the day. She might enjoy a submissive canine play companion and cats. She absolutely needs people ok with her being where ever they are - including in their laps. She should not have to go to off leash parks as she has too many fears for that. However daily walks and probably more training would be really welcomed by her. She is super agile and athletic and might enjoy agility or someone who would run with her.

Please note that Pit Bull Rescue San Diego does not adopt on a first come first served basis. Generally we have formed an opinion about the sort of home that we want for each of the dogs in our program. This opinon is formed from knowing each dog and observing their interactions in various situations and through periodic evaluations. Our goal is to place our charges in the home that is the best possible for that particular dog. Our only goal is happiness and forever homes for our dogs. A forever home is most likely to happen when we do the best we can to find lifestyles and personalities that match.
We are aware that this is a human process and that you may or may not agree with our decisions. Please understand that we take very seriously the lives placed in our hands for this brief time and our decisions are only made out of protectiveness for the breed and the specific dogs we are placing and not out of any judgment of you or your life.
